Viridian Artists, Inc. is pleased to present an exhibition of the color photographs of Robert Smith: "A Child's Garden of Photographs."
On these walls, the close-up, natural landscape comes alive for all ages. Here, in kinship with the sense of exploration, imagination and wonder of a child, Smith has discovered images within the landscape that reveal a personal vision to which we can all relate. There is something for everyone, from "E.T. Thinker" and "UFO" to "Cowabunga" and "Prayer" to the could-be iconic "Pet Rock." The titles lead the viewer's eye to a heightened insight into his photographs.
Smith's signature statement continues to be the nearby and undisturbed, natural landscape that he captures with uncropped compositional clarity. It is an environment that goes unnoticed by most of us and yet is full of richness. As background, he acknowledges a practice, 'Sensory Awareness,' an important part of the human potential movement, that brings him quietly into the present moment and informs his seeing. It is a seeing that offers a unique viewpoint and one can readily understand why the practice has been called the 'Western Zen.'
He approaches the landscape with minimal equipment. All of these photographs are taken with one lens - a normal focal length macro, in natural light with no filters and are hand held.
Today, in troubled times, Smith offers us a refreshing, upbeat and fun chance to see in a new way. We can take it to heart. Please see this work and if you have the opportunity, bring a child.
Robert Smith's photographs are in numerous private collections in the United States, Canada, Japan, South Africa and across Europe.
